there's a part of me that believes mother's day is an ftd/hallmark holiday. but the spirit of the day is an honorable one. cause yesterday i received a bouquet of tulips and roses from my four pets (they're a thoughtful crew, but i'm concerned about how they're earning their spending money). today was a decidedly perfect day spent with my beautiful daughter, my mom-in-law and my niece. plus there were gifts of spicy texas condiments (miss audrey knows what i like) and spring millenery. AND cuatros leches cake and mimosas. a great day topped off with a nap.
yesterday i made a brisket for the first time EVER. is brisket a texas thang? and from which part of the cow does this large slab of meat hail? i bought a 12 lb. hunk of bovine that after bathing in liquid smoke overnight took more than 8 hours to cook. plus, while wrapping and moving this small meat baby, i accidentally sliced into its foil packet (twice!) so it promptly leaked beer and marinade all over my kitchen (did i mention this happened twice?). all this ridiculous and time-consuming food preparation was for the ongoing alcohol-infused antics that continued last night at a small gathering at chez brownjohn. fortunately, the brisket didn't suck, but the dozen or so party-goers didn't make a dent in the barbecued farm animal. heidi and richard will be eating leftovers until memorial day of 2012. good ft. worth- brewed beer and new zealand wine was quaffed; politics were discussed; water assault rifles made an appearance; a rousing game of peek-a-boo was played; children of all ages were entertained; feet were photographed and the evening was an undisputed success.
